WINNER- Grand Prix- 2009 Cannes Film Festival
Academy Award Nominee- Best Foreign Language Film

Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena, cannot read or write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang currently ruling the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up and gaining the gang leader’s confidence in the process. Malik is a fast learner and rises up the prison ranks, all the while secretly devising his own plans…

On Friday May 21st he'll be joined by a superb collection of Maine-based musicians. Musical educators Frank Mauceri and Rick Nelson (from Bowdoin and UMA) will be joining him on saxophone and guitar. Robert Hanson is a Copenhagen police officer who, following a nervous breakdown, is transferred to a small provincial town to be its new Marshall. Robert's big city temperament makes it impossible for him to fit in, or understand the uncivilized, bizarre behavior displayed by the townspeople. The story quickly spirals downward into an intense fable reminiscent of the Coen Brothers. TERRIBLY HAPPY displays a unique, often macabre vision of the darkest depths to which people will go to achieve a sense of security and belonging.

In 1999, retired Argentinian federal justice agent Benjamín Espósito is writing a novel, using an old closed case as the source material. That case is the brutal rape and murder of Liliana Coloto. In addition to seeing the extreme grief of the victim's husband Ricardo Morales, Benjamín, his assistant Pablo Sandoval, and newly hired department chief Irene Menéndez-Hastings were personally affected by the case as Benjamín and Pablo tracked the killer, hence the reason why the unsatisfactory ending to the case has always bothered him. Despite the department already having two other suspects, Benjamín and Pablo ultimately were certain that a man named Isidoro Gómez is the real killer. Although he is aware that historical accuracy is not paramount for the novel, the process of revisiting the case is more an issue of closure for him. He tries to speak to the key players in the case, most specifically Irene, who still works in the justice department and who he has always been attracted to but never pursued due to the differences in their ages and social classes. The other issue is that Gómez is still at large, no one aware if he is alive or dead. But as Pablo at the time mentioned that passion is one thing that cannot be changed in behavior, Benjamín learns now that that premise still holds true.

Mozart premiered "The Abduction from the Seraglio" in 1782, while a craze for all things Turkish, especially Turkish-style music, swept Western Europe. (Following "Abduction," Mozart composed Piano Sonata no. 11 in A major, featuring the famous "rondo alla Turca.") The characterizations of Turkish characters in the libretto (written by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner and adapted by Gottlieb Stephanie) seem like insensitive caricatures to modern eyes. The cruel and boorish actions of the jailer Osmin are reflected in the "Turkish" percussion, which plays just when his behavior is the most repulsive. On the other hand, the European heroes of the opera are accompanied by music of classic Mozartean elegance. In many productions today, the entire Turkey vs. Western Europe premise is scrapped in favor of focusing on the true strengths of the opera (which transcend 18th century prejudices): beautiful melodies, inventive musical forms, fully developed characters, and a comedic plot, which is easily divorced from time and place.

Synopsis

Constanze, a noble Spanish lady, her English servant Blondchen, and Pedrillo, the servant of Constanze's fiancé Belmonte, have been abducted by Moorish pirates and handed over to the Pasha Selim, who imprisons them in his seraglio (a combination of a palace and living quarters for his harem). Selim soon falls in love with Constanze, while Osmin, their coarse, cruel jailer, attempts to woo Blondchen. Belmonte manages to enter the palace in a bid to rescue them. Just as the two couples are about to flee, they are captured by Selim. Rather than kill them, as Osmin suggests, the pasha chooses to set them free, as a way of proving how civilized he is.

For the first time in newly restored high definition, Akira Kurosawa’s epic masterpiece is back on the big screen to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday. A decade-long dream (he had storyboarded the entire film in his own watercolors), Kurosawa’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear” proved the master’s flair for epic sweep and stylistic innovation undimmed at the age of 75. The culmination of his career — clarified Kurosawa, “I said culmination, not conclusion.” Four Oscar nominations, including Best Director, Cinematography, and Art Direction, with Emi Wada winning for her dazzling, three-years-in-the-making costumes.

Local Food & Farming fans: Listen up!

Maine Farmland Trust (MFT), a statewide non-profit which works to preserve farmland and keep Maine's farms farming, is hosting a showing of 8 short documentaries by Maine filmmakers Cecily Pingree and Jason Mann, which tell the diverse stories of eight Maine farms: from Aroostook to York, from potatoes to dairy, from large commercial operations to small farms that sell directly to local people.

John Piotti, Executive Director of Maine Farmland Trust, will be providing additional commentary to the films.

The films were recently shown at the Strand Theatre in Rockland to a packed house of over 350 people, and received a standing ovation. The films were hailed as "moving portraits", "incredible film work", and many guests agreed that "the energy the films created was exciting and emotional." Don't miss this opportunity to see what has farmers, chefs, food connoisseurs and farmland conservation supporters talking about "an unmistakable momentum."

Filmmakers Cecily Pingree and Jason Mann, of Pull-Start Pictures, shot and edited the films over the fall and winter of 2009-2010.

Delighting adults and children alike (especially older children) with uniquely freeing music-making, an Improvox concert may be wild or reverent, quirky or soulful, but never the same twice.

Spinning music on the spot, singers, Kathy Slack, Martin Swinger, Matt Loosigian and Fred White and Deb Hensley will offer up a musical cure for the spectator blues.

Throughout the evening, folks in the audience may be invited (never required) to offer melodic ideas, word prompts, and even their own voices to help create music onstage or off. By the end of the evening, expect to be more of a tribe than an audience.

Those present can expect the unexpected for sure, but they will also be treated to a wide range of prepared a cappella music --from Bobby McFerrin's soulful version of The 23rd Psalm, to a spunky presentation of Old Blue, to the more traditional Bring Me Little Water Sylvie, complete with body percussion. And a saucy new arrangement of a Quebecois "deedle" tune, The Cajun Stripper, is sure to cause a lot of toes to tap.

Prior to the concert Improvox will offer a FREE improv singing VORTEX workshop for concertgoers from 6-7 at Jai Yoga (3rd Floor Fort Andross). The VORTEX workshop (for all vocal levels) is an opportunity for adults and teens to share melodies, rhythms, acoustic textures and games that support vocal exploration in an uplifting and supportive atmosphere.

VORTEX participants will share a freeing vocal experience, liberating the voice and building community through spontaneous vocal exploration. ImproVox members guide you every step of the way during this exciting vocal journey.

Improvox explores vocal sound and harmony like a dancer explores space and rhythm, like a painter explores color and form, like s songbird explores the sunrise – the joyful anticipation of something wonderful on the horizon.

Improvox musicians come from around the state and various walks of life:  Dr. Fred white is a clinical psychologist who advocates singing as a healing activity. Deb Hensely is the Assistant Director for the center for Ecological Living and Learning and a consultant on the value of music and art in early education.  Kathy Slack is a vocalist, humorist, and teacher of communication, public speaking, and voice. Martin Swinger is a music educator teaching songwriting to elementary and middle school students.  Matt Loosigian is a children's music teacher, choir director and songwriter.

Concertgoers can expect to be surprised and delighted with the vocal creativity of this group "You guys totally rock. Anyone interested in vocal music, improvisation or otherwise, MUST hear this group." "The two times I have heard your group, I leave energized and full of song. Thank you for the inspiration you are."

A deeply moving portrait of a family undergoing a dramatic rupture. Paris-based film producer Grégoire Canvel has it all - a wife and three daughters he adores and a stimulating job that he's devoted to. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance and a smash-hit at SXSW, STRONGMAN is the cinema verite tale of Stanless Steel--The Strongest Man in the World at Bending Steel and Metal. Equally comic and tragic, tender and tough, STRONGMAN has been hailed as one of the most singular American documentaries in years. It follows Stanless--part-time New Jersey scrap-metal hauler, rough-hewn philosopher, and the only person in the world who can legitimately bend a penny with his fingers---as he faces the tests of his Fellini-esque calling while simultaneously grappling with his advancing age, difficult personal relationships, and a world that seems constantly beyond his mighty grasp.

STRONGMAN is a film about faith, about believing in yourself and a film about never giving up. It is a film about weakness and a film about strength.

The charismatic Gianni Di Gregorio (co-scenarist of the smash hit Gomorrah), stars in his directorial debut—an utterly charming tale of good food, feisty ladies and unlikely friendships during a very Roman holiday. Broke, and armed with only a glass of wine and a wry sense of humor, middle-aged Gianni resides with his 93-year-old mother in their ancient apartment. The condo debts are mounting, but if Gianni looks after the building manager's mother during the Pranzo di Ferragosto (Italy's biggest summer holiday, and the Feast of the Assumption), all will be forgiven. Then the manager also shows up with an auntie, and then a doctor friend appears with his mother in tow... Can Gianni keep four such lively mamas well fed and happy in these cramped quarters?

Winner of numerous prizes at international festivals, including Best First Film at Venice and the Satyajit Ray Award at London, plus the Golden Snail at the Academy of Food and Film in Bologna, Mid-August Lunch is both warmly vibrant family drama and delicately balanced comedy of manners.

Centered on a rare interview that director and friend Tamra Davis shot with Basquiat over twenty years ago, this definitive documentary chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the young artist. In the crime-ridden NYC of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO; in 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time; and by 1983 he is an artist with "rock star status." But his celebrity quickly began to overshadow his art, and in 1988 Basquiat dies of an overdose at the age of 27.

With compassion and psychological insight, Tamra Davis details the mysteries that surround this charismatic young man, an artist of enormous talent whose fortunes mirrored the rollercoaster quality of the downtown scene he seemed to embody. But it's Basquiat's own words in THE RADIANT CHILD that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

Featuring interviews with Julian Schnabel, Larry Gagosian, Bruno Bischofberger, Tony Shafrazi, Fab 5 Freddy, Jeffrey Deitch, Glenn O'Brien, Maripol, Kai Eric, Nicholas Taylor, Fred Hoffmann, Michael Holman, Diego Cortez, Annina Nosei, Suzanne Mallouk, Rene Ricard, Kenny Scharf, among others.

"The man himself stares into Davis's lens, both confident and scared; for these moments alone, the movie is key." – Time Out New York

"Using clips from home movies, newsreels and public access TV, Davis does a heroic job of bringing the edgy and diffuse mixed-media New York art scene of the '80s back to life." – Boxoffice Magazine

"It places Basquiat's art in a cultural context with an enthusiasm and zest that make the many pictures shown come blazingly alive." – Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"World class fiddler... far from just offering one dance tune after another, simple settings allow the true beauty of the music to shine through" - Sing Out

The traditional music of New England can be as warm and comforting as a winter fire or as potent and exhilarating as a summer thunderstorm. Fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger is a master of both moods, a winsome, sweet-voiced singer who brings new life to old ballads and a skillful, dynamic fiddler who captures the driving rhythm and carefree joy of dance tunes old and new.

Raised in a small town in Maine and now living in Vermont, Lissa grew up with music. She began playing fiddle at the age of six, inspired by her mother's interest in folk music and a family friend who was a professional violinist. Soon she was studying with influential Maine fiddler Greg Boardman and sitting in with the Maine Country Dance Orchestra. By the time she was in high school she was playing concerts on her own, specializing in the sprightly New England dance tunes that combine influences from the British Isles and Quebec with homegrown twists that have been evolving since Colonial days. Another of her major influences was the diverse musical community that she found at fiddle camps, where she had a chance to play with and learn from a wide variety of musicians including noted Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser. In 2001 she graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in contemporary improvisation, and since then has been performing around the US and internationally for a growing audience of enthusiastic listeners. She has recorded eight CDs, (five solo and three with various groups).

Lissa's fiddling is uplifting and lively, and her singing is gentle and evocative. Both in concert and in the studio she is regularly accompanied by some of New England's best musicians, including guitarist Bethany Waickman and accordion player Jeremiah McLane.

Recently she has been closely studying the roots of the Downeast traditional music that she first heard as a young girl. Her latest project is a pair of CDs dedicated to reintroducing some wonderful but largely forgotten songs and tunes from New England that she uncovered through archival research at the University of Maine and elsewhere. "Song", released in April 2008, contains ten timeless ballads that go back as far as the eighteenth century that she set to carefully crafted modern arrangements, while "Dance", to be released on September 8th, 2010, will feature fiddle tunes. "There is currently a lot of focus on traditional American music from the South", she explains, "and many bands are exploring and recording that repertoire, but no one is getting to hear all the amazing traditional music from the North. This is my attempt at getting some of that music out there for people to enjoy."

Whether playing for a folk club audience or a hall full of dancers, Lissa brings to the stage enthusiasm, energy, and the bright future of New England's musical traditions.

Premiering in Maine in conjunction with National Honeybee Awareness Day, this film documents the mysterious disappearance of honeybees across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. The documentary is narrated by Academy Award Nominee, Ellen Page. Following the screening, Christy Hemenway of Gold Star Honeybees will discuss our need to reexamine our approaches to beekeeping and pollination practices.

Filmed across the U.S., in Europe, Australia and Asia, the documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting opinions abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.

The discussion, following the film, will be led by Christy Hemenway who is an advocate for natural beekeeping practices. She was recently published in The Natural Farmer and has spoken at many New England beekeeping associations and other eco-friendly venues.  Ms Hemenway will speak this summer at The American Community Gardening Association in Atlanta, The Northeast Organic Farmers Association in Amherst, and this fall at the Green Festival in Washington DC.

This quartet was formed in 2006, the year all of its members moved to New York City to study music. The group began to play together with increasing frequency due in large part to their mutual respect and admiration for traditional jazz as well as their strong beliefs in using the history of this music as a foundation for creating new compositions and new music. The members, Danny Lubin-Laden on trombone, Raffi Garabedian on tenor saxophone, Craig Weinrib on drums, and Ross Gallagher on acoustic bass, have each contributed original compositions and ideas in developing the music of this group. And after tours of both the East & West coast, as well as numerous appearances in New York City, this quartet has become a true collective in which each member is irreplaceable.

Paris 1913. At the Theatre Des Champs-Elysées, Igor Stravinsky premieres his "The Rite Of Spring." Coco Chanel attends the premiere and is mesmerized... But the revolutionary work is too modern, too radical: the enraged audience boos and jeers. A near riot ensues. Stravinsky is inconsolable. Seven years later, now rich, respected and successful, Coco Chanel meets Stravinsky again — a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris after the Russian Revolution. The attraction between them is immediate and electric. Coco offers Stravinsky the use of her villa in Garches so he will be able to work, and he moves in straight away, with his children and consumptive wife. Bill Daniel returns to Frontier for an evening of lost and found music films:

SONIC ORPHANS
lost music films 1965-87

Film Tramp Bill Daniel is back in the van on tour with a new program
of recently unearthed16mm footage.

SONIC ORPHANS is a compilation reel of lost and found clips projected
on 16mm, mostly silent, of some rare celluloid gems that have been
seen by almost no one and have never seen the light of youtube. Most
of this footage is truly orphaned film--- abandoned, lost, found, and
now presented raw without editing.
The presentation includes a discussion of "orphan films" as they are
called by archivists, and at some venues on tour, a one-night photo
exhibit.

Featuring: The Beatles/Avengers/Huns/Boy Problems/Sonic Youth/Butthole Surfers/Johnny Cash

There is a flavor of goofy nostalgia to much of the footage, but the
images are also haunting--- rock and roll ghosts, still singing,
pogoing, sneaking hits on cigarettes, making direct eye contact.  Some
of these scenes have audio, but some of the reels were long ago
separated from their sound tracks before they ever had a chance to be
edited and printed.

Each of the films has it's own story, like if a stray dog at the pound
could tell you how he got there. Part of the evening's presentation is
a telling of some of these stories, and a discussion on the
relationship between underground music and film cultures.

Me: I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and was wowed at an early age by the songwriting of Simon Joyner. I started writing my own songs a few years later and finally, after several more years of trying to write and sound like a variety of people I thought were awesome, I realized that was not the point. That's when I started Run On Sentence in Portland Oregon. I tour extensively with and without the band and I really enjoy it. I've spent about 14 months on the road since 2007 and would like to continue touring, both in North America and abroad.

The Band: Early on, there were three of us but, as was the point of the name, there grew to be what is now a rotating cast of talented folks and currently Run On Sentence could be anywhere from 1-12 people, although it is usually (and ideally) 5-8.
We put out our first album Oh When the Wind Comes Down with Hush Records in the Fall of 2008 and have received a lot of positive response both in sales and reviews. Just before it came out we did a Daytrotter session and, earlier this year, the song "Stonewall" was chosen as NPR's Song of the Day.

Brunswick – August 23, 2010 – All voters in legislative District 66 in Brunswick are invited to a series of public forums between September 7th and 15th to meet their candidates for Representative to the Legislature and to discuss key issues. Each forum will take place from 7 pm to 9 pm. The schedule will be as follows: "Food and Energy," Tuesday, September 7th, at Frontier Cafe; "Transportation and Redeveloping the Base," Monday, September 13th, at Curtis Memorial Library; and "Health Care and Education," Wednesday, September 15th, at Curtis Memorial Library.

"I like to be well informed when I vote," says Fred Horch, who is running for Representative and whose campaign is sponsoring the forums. "That's why I decided to use some of my clean elections funding to provide this opportunity for people to get to know their candidates for office and to learn more about important issues."

According to Horch campaign treasurer Dave Frans, both Jonathan Crimmins and Alex Cornell du Houx, the two other candidates in District 66 (which includes the half of Brunswick north of McKeen Street and Bath Road), have agreed to participate in each forum. Spending campaign money to host other candidates is an unorthodox move, but one that Horch believes serves the public interest.

"We are a clean elections campaign," notes Horch. "It just seems like the right thing to do to use that public funding to help voters become better informed."

The fall campaign season leading up to November's election traditionally starts on Labor Day. Holding these public forums in the middle of September gives voters—even those who plan to vote by absentee ballot in October—plenty of time to consider who they want to support, explains Horch. All three forums will be filmed so that local public access TV stations can broadcast them if they choose. In addition, Horch plans to post video excerpts on his campaign web site at www.FredHorch.org.

In 1956, Westbrook, Maine resident and television repair man Al Hawkes founded the Event Records label.  With his wife Barbara helping run the business and his friend Richard Greeley helping run the studio, Al began producing records by local Maine artists and popular musicians on tour in Maine "from away."   Throughout the 1950s and 60s, he created some of the most highly regarded country, Bluegrass, and rockabilly recordings – including songs by Dick Curless, Lenny Breau (as a teenage guitar virtuoso), Curtis Johnson, Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody, Charile Bailey, the Lilly Brothers and Don Stover. Many of these artists were on the verge of national stardom, and many ultimately chose to not follow the path to Nashville but instead remained up north, creating a distinct regional sound on a distinctly independent label.

The Eventful Life of Al Hawkes tells the story of Event Records, and Al's own story as an accomplished musician and officially designated "First Generation Bluegrass Music Pioneer".  As Al works to preserve the thousands of recordings he has made and collected in the past sixty years, we learn how vital our musical history is to understanding the culture of our region.

Special live performance by Al Hawkes Trio following the screening.
